Level 233 is the 234th level of the Backrooms. It is referred to as the “Marble Gardens” by its discoverers—supposedly the forgotten Explorers Group.
Description:
Level 233 is an endless plain of gardens, separated by a marble path and short marble walls. These walls vary in height from 2 centimeters to 4 meters. It is not advised to travel anywhere past the walls, as this is where entities typically reside. They are physically unable to enter due to some sort of unseeable/mental barrier, with some wanderers reporting being lured into exiting the safe zone. The sky above is in eternal daylight, with little to no clouds present. Despite there being no celestial bodies, the time of day varies slightly from morning to noon, evident by the slight variations in color as well as brightness.
The gardens of Level 233 are anomalous, though most people do not notice these properties. Plants appear lush, green, and beautiful at first glance, containing various enigmatic flowers and grasses. Close inspection of these plants uncover their true biological makeup—being what appears to be flesh. It should be noted that this only seems to be the case if one is to look intensely at the plants, appearing as normal flora from a distance, but deep red and flesh-like up close. Because most wanderers do not take the time to closely inspect the plants, they are typically not aware of this reality.
One of the strangest oddities about Level 233 is the existence of various marble statues. These statues mimic a wanderer’s childhood memories; for example, one may come across a statue depicting their mother cooking food or tucking them in. Upon witnessing these statues, wanderers are hit with a strong sense of nostalgia and longing for the earlier (and oftentimes more sacred) eras of their lives. This often causes the person in question to become hypnotized, wanting to make physical contact with the statue and therefore leaving the safety of the path.
As for what kinds of entities reside on this level, most are anomalous and unique to the area. Of course, some may classify the marble statues as entities of their own, though they do not seem to directly harm wanderers. One of the rarest, but still very much deadly sights, is a dark, angel-like ghost that is often perceived to possess an unnatural and enigmatic beauty, luring even the most suspecting of wanderers. The true appearance of these figures are unknown, though some say they are simply manifestations of the human mind, therefore having no true physical appearance. Attempting to make physical contact with one of these entities will result in the individual vanishing unexpectedly.
As DNA testing has determined the flora to contain human flesh, various tests were conducted to see if there is any correlation between the humans who vanish by the entities and the biological makeup in the flesh. The tests concluded that a striking correlation exists between specific wanderers’ DNA and the DNA of the flesh, leading to a hypothesis that wanderers who vanish soon become one with the level itself, and that those who die of other causes will do so gradually. It is also thought that when a person dies, a small albeit empty gravestone appears someplace within the level. As for other entities—Hounds and Skin-Stealers are most common. Sub-Angels have also been occasionally reported on Level 233.
Due to the nature of this level, most who enter are mentally unable to leave, therefore one must be prepared with strong mental fortitude and willpower.
