Level 284 is the 285th positive level of the Backrooms.

Description

Level 284 is a vast but ultimately finite labyrinth of concrete corridors. Though expansive, the level has been proven finite. The environment is utilitarian and cold: the floor is made of coarse, unpolished concrete. The walls are constructed of white-painted brick, often chipped and smudged by unknown substances. The ceilings are unusually low and are cluttered with black, grey, and yellow conduits and industrial piping. Some areas between the piping reveal torn insulation material.

Behind certain exposed insulation patches, a slow-dripping translucent liquid has been observed. This liquid has a pale aquamarine hue, slightly viscous consistency, and a pH of 4.2. Chemical analysis reveals it contains trace amounts of copper sulfate, ethylene glycol, and unidentifiable protein strands. While it is not immediately corrosive to skin, prolonged contact causes numbness and localized irritation. Ingestion is strongly discouraged due to its neurotoxic effects on test subjects. There is an active light source throughout the level, but its origin is a mystery. The corridors are bathed in dim, flickering white light, seemingly radiating from the ceiling itself, despite no visible bulbs or fixtures. This ambient light adjusts in intensity based on proximity to the ceiling's piping network.

Wooden doors are interspersed randomly throughout the level. Some are padlocked or bolted shut, while others swing open into storage-like chambers, rooms of unknown purpose, or dead ends. A minority of these doors lead to structural breaches between corridors, some containing useful supplies such as canned food, KickX bars, Almond Water bottles, or rudimentary tools. The level's atmospheric composition has been recorded as follows: nitrogen (78.2%), oxygen (20.8%), carbon dioxide (0.5%), and trace gases including argon, sulfur dioxide, and methane (0.5%). The average temperature remains steady at 19.6°C (67.3°F), and atmospheric pressure measures at 0.97 atm, slightly lower than standard Earth conditions.

Windows are rare and should be treated with extreme caution. Most appear painted or sealed shut, but on occasion, windows will reveal distorted imagery of brick walls, flickering lights, or in some cases, a featureless red void. Opening these windows almost always results in disappearance or fatal encounters with Entity 2. The red void is a visual cue: any window displaying it is to be considered an Entity 2 instance.

Level 284 exerts a subtle psychological influence on all who enter. The confined space, repeating geometry, and distant industrial hum create an overwhelming sensation of being watched. This can be countered temporarily by placing large mirrors or reflective surfaces near doorways, which seem to "disrupt" the oppressive atmosphere. However, this effect is limited. Other dangerous elements of the level are narrow paths that trigger sudden temperature drops and the presence of entities such as Facelings in mining uniforms, Clumps, Deathmoths, Dullers, Skin-Stealers, and The Maw. The level's anomalous behavior includes "looping segments" that appear to change orientation, creating disorientation and sometimes stranding wanderers in closed loops for hours or days.

Colonies and Outposts

Due to Level 284's hostile architecture and psychological strain, establishing a permanent colony is difficult. Nevertheless, several makeshift camps have been found. These camps consist of salvaged materials formed into beds and storage containers and are typically clustered near intersections or unlocked supply rooms. Most are long-abandoned, but a few remain inhabited by 3–5 wanderers—solitary, wary, and often emotionally disturbed. These wanderers aren't cooperative and tend to avoid prolonged conversation. In addition, the M.E.G. attempted to establish a base here but abandoned the project after repeated disappearances and one case of unexplained psychological collapse affecting the entire team.

Entrances and Exits

Entrances

Level 284 can be accessed from Level 8 by finding a segment of corridor with an unusually smooth concrete wall; knocking three times on this surface causes it to crack open and reveal a stairwell leading down. A metallic hatch labeled “TUNNEL ENTRANCE” in Level 127 leads directly into a sealed shaft that drops into Level 284. From Level -2, entering a rusted red utility door labeled “STORAGE - 1966” in an empty hallway will transition the wanderer to a corridor in Level 284.

Exits

One may exit Level 284 into Level 139 by locating a vertical maintenance ladder behind a green wooden door marked “EXIT STAIRWELL B”. Ascending this ladder for seven minutes leads to a dark service hallway that transitions into Level 139. Another exit point leads to Level 273 through contact with a blue viscous liquid pool found behind a sealed pressure valve room; full submersion leads here. Finding a VHS tape titled “HOME FOOTAGE” inside an abandoned crate and holding it for 15 seconds results in instantaneous transfer to Level 40. Lastly, entering a storage closet containing a flickering lightbulb and a metal grate floor will drop the wanderer into Level -1 if the grate is removed and descended through.
