Level 342 is the 343rd positive level of the Backrooms.
Description
Level 342 consists of a vast, grid-like outdoor complex enclosed by a network of uniform rectangular structures. These buildings, made of stucco-like panels and synthetic wood sidings, average 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) in height and span 10 to 15 meters (32.8 to 49.2 feet) in length. Each structure is separated by artificial grass fields and paved concrete paths that form clean, angular walkways throughout the level.
The artificial grass, vibrant green and almost unnaturally even, covers the bulk of open spaces. It remains pristine and unweathered regardless of foot traffic. Flanking each side of the synthetic grass is a narrow strip—approximately 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) wide—filled with smooth landscaping rocks. The rocks appear to consist of polished quartzite, granite, and feldspar. Interestingly, any attempt to collect or remove multiple rocks results in their reappearance along the perimeter within approximately 6 minutes, a process believed to involve localized matter regeneration. This regeneration does not emit visible light or sound but has been documented by time-lapse recording to involve spontaneous reintegration of stones from thin air.
The atmosphere in Level 342 is comfortably temperate and Earth-like, with an average temperature of 22.7°C (72.9°F). Atmospheric composition includes:
- Nitrogen – 77.8%
- Oxygen – 20.4%
- Argon – 0.9%
- Carbon Dioxide – 0.5%
- Trace Gases – 0.4%
Gravity is measured at 1.01 g, and atmospheric pressure averages 1.02 atm.

Black plastic or metal tables surrounded by up to four matching chairs are placed at regular intervals across the lawns. These are non-anomalous and often used for rest or social gathering. The buildings throughout the level feature solid gray metal doors of varied industrial designs. Upon opening, they reveal clean, utilitarian interiors: white walls, stained concrete flooring, ceiling-mounted fluorescent lights, and occasional vending machines or shelves with Almond Water, preserved food, or basic tools (such as Crowbars). Interior layouts vary but usually contain 1–3 rooms. Although no entities are recorded within the level, several wanderers report feeling an “intangible, overwhelming presence” when spending prolonged periods indoors, particularly when alone or silent.
Colonies and Outposts
The Corridor Circle
Located at the northeastern sector of Level 342, “The Corridor Circle” is the largest colony on this level, housing 101 people. It occupies a ring of eight interconnected buildings forming a rough circle, centered around a communal gathering table. Residents of the Circle have established a cooperative micro-society focusing on trade, mental well-being, and maintenance of the local structures. The outer buildings serve as living quarters, while the central ones function as food storage, supply exchange points, and medical assistance stations.
The governing model is a rotating council of nine, elected every three months. These council members handle logistical coordination, dispute resolution, and contact with external travelers. Rules are minimal and focused on mutual respect and non-violence. The colony values peace and has no tolerance for hoarding or aggressive behaviors. Because of the level's calm nature, psychological support is available to help wanderers decompress from traumatic experiences in hostile levels.
The Corridor Circle is open to trade, primarily offering bottled Almond Water, ration packs, basic survival tools, and safe resting spots. In return, they accept batteries, books, first-aid materials, and information about level routes or entrances. The colony welcomes temporary visitors but only grants permanent residence following a vetting process designed to preserve their communal stability.
Stonewalk Bastion
Situated along the southern quadrant, “Stonewalk Bastion” is a smaller settlement composed of 44 individuals. This group occupies four linear buildings adjacent to a particularly large field of regenerating stones. Their proximity to the anomaly has made them deeply curious about the properties of the regenerating rocks, and many members are amateur researchers and naturalists. The Bastion is organized like a guild, with open discussions and horizontal decision-making processes rather than a formal hierarchy.
Functionally, Stonewalk Bastion emphasizes scientific logging, experimentation, and the documentation of ambient phenomena in Level 342. They maintain meticulous records of rock regeneration times, atmospheric fluctuations, and subtle changes in environmental acoustics. The colony includes a research archive open to all wanderers seeking data on low-risk Backrooms environments. Their culture is highly inclusive and values intellectual inquiry.
The Bastion is trade-friendly and often exchanges documented research, navigation maps, and scientific gear in exchange for lab tools, high-capacity power cells, and external research findings. They have a positive relationship with the Corridor Circle and frequently collaborate on ecosystem studies.
Entrances and Exits
Entrances
Level 342 can be accessed from Level 197 by entering a service door labeled “MAINT ZONE C” and continuing straight through three consecutive gray doors. Upon opening the fourth door, one will find themselves in Level 342, standing in one of its central paths. From Level 19, one may find a maintenance shaft with a ladder; climbing to the top for approximately 90 meters (295 feet) and opening the hatch leads directly into one of the buildings in Level 342. An entry point also exists within Level 10: following a gravel trail for approximately 40 minutes may lead to a sudden transition where the dirt becomes concrete, and the surrounding field is replaced by the structures of Level 342.
Exits
No-clipping through the synthetic grass may lead to Level 10, though the success rate is inconsistent. No-clipping through the rocky perimeter on either side of the grass reliably sends wanderers to Level 8. Attempting to climb onto the rooftops of the buildings—despite the smooth surfaces and initial resistance—has been proven to transport wanderers to Level 201. A final, more difficult exit is located within one of the gray metal doors containing a spiral staircase: descending for approximately 500 steps will lead to Level 500.
