Level 485 is the 486th level of the Backrooms. It was discovered by the M.E.G. on 1/26/2026, and has been colloquially nicknamed "Pipe World".
Description:
Level 485 is an industrial complex made of large metal pipes and various machinery, with a perpetually overcast sky set at noon. The width of the pipes themselves vary from ten (10) centimeters to twenty (20) meters in radius. The pipes twist and turn around the machinery, with the occasional vent on the sides or ends of some of the pipes.
While it is possible to go inside some of the pipes, this is not advised due to them having sudden bouts of extreme heat. This often happens randomly and without warning, filling them with steam. Nevertheless, if one has enough heat protection, they could theoretically use the pipes as a way of traversing the level. You can however use the metal staircases to access higher or lower parts of the level, which is theorized to reach up to two (2) kilometers in height. It is advised to watch your step as some staircases can end suddenly. The ground is made of asphalt, however this is usually obscured by the large amount of pipes and machinery.
The insides of the structure can be opened via the occasional metal door. The interior looks very similar to the exterior, but with even more pipes and machinery along with rotating gears. You can also find valves that can be turned to change the positioning of the gears and pipes. This can be very dangerous if one is in the general path of these changes, as you may become lodged within the machinery. Additionally, elevators can be spotted within these rooms, which can be used to access different floors of this interior. Research on this area is still ongoing, and should be avoided at the time being.
There are many mysterious properties about Level 485 that make it hard to understand in its full capacity. It is thought that the level itself is alive or sentient in some capacity, due to the sudden shifting of pipes and gears that turn by themselves without any human intervention. It is unknown how large the complex is, and may very well be over millions of square kilometers in size. Many people theorize that the level is constantly building upon itself, expanding its borders with even more pipes and machinery.
The entities that can be found on this level are Dullers, Bursters, Death Rats, Camo Crawlers, Insanities and Clumps, but there are thought to be many more. They are usually found near the ground floor of the level, or within the interiors of the complex.
Bases, Outposts, and Communities:
M.E.G. Unnamed Research Outpost:
- A small outpost consisting of 8 people.
- Are equipped with protective gear and weaponry that they use to traverse the level safely.
- Are trained with researching and exploring the anomalous attributes of Level 485.
Entrances and Exits:
Entrances
- Metal doors on Level 2 or Level 3 leading to an outside area will take you here.
- Occasionally, you may also find these doors within the boiler room of Level 5.
- There are also occasional entrances on Level 6, however these are quite rare.
- Falling asleep on The Dark Metro also has a rare chance of leading you here.
Exits
- Metal doors can sometimes lead back to Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, or Level 6.
- Finding the edge of the complex will lead you to Level 11.2, Level 72, Level 80, or Level 455 depending on the scenery you arrive at.
- Coming across a factory will lead you to Level 935.
- Finding a clock tower on the outskirts of the level leads to Level 486 upon entry.
