Level ε's most iconic photo.
Level ε (Pronunciation: Epsilon) is the fifth Hellenic level of the Backrooms, appearing as an infinitely grand castle. It was officially discovered on 2/14/2026 by a group of various explorers loosely tied to the M.E.G.
Description:
Level ε is a grand set of medieval castles built within an infinite array of mountains. Interconnected through winding pathways and halls, a perpetual starry night sky looms over the area. Both an interior and exterior section are present, all with similar castle-like architecture. Large towers can be spotted among the castles, often leading out to scenic balconies. Surfaces are mainly composed of stone bricks or old wooden planks, with grand archways and staircases leading to higher and lower areas of the structure. Commonly, one may notice a faint indigo tint that is present throughout, which originates from an unknown source.
On Level ε, there are many areas that can be encountered within the winding castles. Large ballrooms and banquet halls - as well as bedchambers and treasuries - are just some of the many types of rooms that wanderers have mentioned coming across. Within the banquet halls, plates of delectable feasts and foods line the tables, which are safe to consume, restocking every so often. You may also occasionally find valuable items such as Royal Rations or Level Keys upon these tables. There is also a consistent supply of Almond Water flowing through the streams lining the castles, which can be sufficiently repurposed for consumption. This makes survival on Level ε seem manageable, as long as one watches where they are going and makes sure not to come across any hostile entities.
As for what kinds of hostile entities appear within the castle, it is hard to tell exactly, but there are quite a variety. Large swarms of Deathmoths - as well as Hounds and Dullers - are occasionally reported to roam the halls. However, there are reports of other, undocumented entities that are exclusive to this level.
Furthermore, Level ε possibly holds quite a bit of history in relation to the nature of the Backrooms as a whole. Evident by the ancient scrolls and readings found on shelves, Level ε may have been one of the first few levels of the ancient Backrooms. This also suggests that there may have been a different order of levels in the past, or at least a different starting point.
"The Dungeon"
Rarely, one may come across a large “dungeon” area that can be accessed by going down enough flights of stairs or via finding a trapdoor. Darkness permeates this area, with chambers separated by metal bars and doors. Most of these doors are locked, however entering one that is not locked will result in getting yourself trapped, with the only way of escaping being if someone else finds a key to unlock the door and save you. Skeletons of past survivors can be found in some cells, which suggest that many people who entered this place never escaped. Adding to the danger of this place, entities are much more common here.
Rumors of an enigmatic entity that resides within the dungeon have surfaced. This entity is said to appear as a cloaked humanoid figure with a magical staff, located within his own sort of "workshop". The rumors suggest that any contact with this figure will result in death or mutilation, the cause of this being unknown. Nevertheless, the possible presence of this entity makes entering the dungeon area ill-advised.
M.E.G. Advisory:
Reports of the cloaked entity have resurfaced, confirming its existence. It is still undetermined what lies beneath its cloak, but what is known is that this entity is capable of performing spells and curses. Any physical contact with this entity has been proven fatal, with many people either being turned to stone or mutilated beyond recognition.
Bases, Outposts, and Communities:
M.E.G. Research Outpost "Hellenic Observatory":
Founded by the M.E.G. on 4/24/2026 in order to further study the anomalous properties of Level ε, analyzing the star patterns and obtaining insight on the various phenomena that occur. Home to around ~21 individuals, these people have decided to settle down here due to the abundance of resources and significant intel on the Backrooms as a whole.
The Cloaked Ones:
A group of mysterious individuals set up in a large library section of Level ε, all wearing similar cloaks to the hypothesized entity that resides in the dungeon. It is unknown if these are wanderers or a group of entities, as they do not appear to speak, being completely silent. This outpost is home to around 100-150 of these beings, all of which are rumored to have resided within the library for years. This group has not been reported to be hostile, instead choosing to hide and stalk wanderers that pass by. There are debates on whether or not they are connected to the entity rumored to be within the dungeon, therefore it is advised that one should avoid them.
Entrances and Exits:
Entrances:
- Rarely, one may find a door on Level 5, Level 27, or Level 414 leading here.
- It is also said that any of the Hellenic levels - particularly the early ones such as Level γ - have entrances leading to Level ε.
Exits:
- To exit, you must find a door at the end of the castle. This will take you to Level ζ
- Some staircases lead to Level γ.
- Finding an ancient scroll depicting visions of the future will lead to Level Δ upon reading the entire script.
- Sleeping under a table in one of the banquet halls will lead you to Level 226 upon waking up.
